Devil-Bug from George Lippard's 1844 book "The Quaker City: The Monks of Monk Hall". It's a killer thriller set in crime ridden 1844 Philadelphia. George Lippard was a good friend of Edgar Allan Poe's and would have been equally famous had he not died at the premature age of 31 of consumption (tuberculosis). I highly recommend the book! Quaker City held the record for most books sold by a living author in it's heyday. Illustration for Jeffrey Weinstock's "Encyclopedia of Literary and Cinematic Monsters" published by Ashgate, 2014.
